Originally Green Mate was the most popular drink of the Gouchos, the South American cowboys. Produced out of the dried and crushed leaves of the Mate tree, a palm species, it is rich in vitamins and minerals. Due to the high percentage of caffeine, Mate is a very stimulating drink. It is best when brewed up with fresh water of around 176 F and steeped for about 5-10 minutes.
